The Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Osogbo, Prof. Labo Popoola has warned the protesting students of the institution to desist from protesting the arrest of their colleagues by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC on Thursday morning.
The VC said any protest by the students over the arrest of those allegedly involved in internet crime, would be a misadventure.
The students who mobilized themselves and gathered at the Shasha junction in Oke-Baale, Osogbo around 9:40am on Thursday, made pockets of bonfire on the road and restricted vehicular movement.
While armed with clubs, the angry students condemned incessant arrest of students by EFCC, SARS and DSS operatives over alleged internet fraud.
The protesting students shunned entreaties by the Policemen and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps who were drafted to restore peace and order in that area.
Even officials of the university tried to plead with the students to vacate the road but their efforts proved futile as the students stood their ground and barricaded the road.
The students paraded placards with inscriptions calling for an end to incessant arrest of their colleagues by security agents.
A statement from the office of the VC reads, “the management of Osun State University, Osogbo has made it clear to our students that it will be a misadventure to protest the arrest of individuals suspected to be involved in crime. No one can stop investigations.
“The outcome of investigations will determine the next steps of the University. Significantly, the arrested students were not in our hostels. They were in private hostels outside the campus.
“Ensure you and your classmates keep away from any unreasonable protest please. God bless you.”
This information was shared on all platforms of the staff and students of the institution immediately the protests broke out.
